A New World

Matthew Kraemer will conduct the MSO in a dynamic program capturing the American spirit. William Grant Still’s “Festive Overture,” Copland’s “Variation on a Shaker Melody,” Barber’s “Violin Concerto,” and Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 9” (From the New World) will provide a wonderfully satisfying performance for all who attend.

Violinist Rubén Rengel will be the featured soloist for the Barber Concerto. Described as an “excellent soloist” of “great virtuosity” (NY Concert Review), with performances depicted as “thrilling” (Boston Globe), violinist Rubén Rengel is quickly gaining recognition as a remarkably gifted artist. Rubén has appeared as a soloist with the Symphonies of Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, New Jersey, Vermont, Oakland, and Venezuela. He was the first-place winner of the Sphinx Competition in 2018 and is now part of the Sphinx Soloist Program. This program showcases top Black and Latinx string players through professional performance opportunities with leading orchestras around the country. Learn more about Rengel by visiting his website: https://www.rubenrengel.com/

Join us before the performance for a pre-concert lecture from 6:45-7:15 pm in the Hospitality Suite on the second floor of Emens Auditorium. Dr. James Thompson, MSO Education Coordinator, will provide an insightful and informative introduction to the pieces on the program for those concertgoers who would like more background about the music they will hear!
